Five tips to discover what Frankfurt has to offer in May
1. The Opera Square (Opernplatz) Festival May 8-17
Frankfurt celebrates its magnificent Opernplatz with a lively mix of culture and culinary delights. People meet here under white sun umbrellas to enjoy international specialties with a glass of wine or prosecco. Artists perform on various stages, and in the evening the façade of the opera house is spectacularly bathed in illumination.
2. A bicycle tour on the banks of the Main
From Villa Orange, you can quickly reach the Main through the gardens. You can cycle for hours along the banks of the Main between the city’s East and West Harbors (Osthafen and Westhafen) enjoying a view of Frankfurt’s impressive skyline. You will surely want to visit one of the many museums along your route. The Städel Museum celebrates the diversity, dynamism, and modernity of Käthe Kollwitz, in the Museum of World Cultures (Weltkulturenmuseum) you can listen to soundscapes, and the Senckenberg Museum is dedicated to biodiversity. Our restaurant recommendation: Restaurant Emma Metzler in the Museum Angewandte Kunst
Definitely worth a visit: The Schirn Kunsthalle has a fantastic exhibition on hip-hop.
3. Drinking apple wine
Apple wine – known locally as Ebbelwei, Schoppe or Stöffche – is the national beverage of Frankfurt. It is traditionally drunk in a quaint apple wine pub from a Gerippte, a glass with a diamond pattern. There is even a variation of the traditional May punch, Maibowle, that uses apple wine, sparkling wine, and sweet woodruff. A ride on the Ebbelwei Express is also a fun treat.
4. Experience Wäldchestag with the locals
Wäldchestag is Frankfurt’s national holiday and it boasts a long tradition. A visit to the city forest on Pentecost weekend (May 17 to 21) and especially on Tuesday – Wäldchestag – is a must for almost everyone.
5. Try Frankfurt Grüne Soße
Grie' Soß, as it is called in the local dialect, is a specialty of Frankfurt. It is typically made from 7 herbs and is eaten with boiled potatoes and either an egg or boiled beef. “Green sauce” is available in many Frankfurt apple wine pubs. And from May 11 to 18, the Grüne Soße Festival is held at Frankfurt’s Rossmarkt.
